Soviet Monumentality Revisited: Avant-Garde Murals and Mosaics as Art and Communication, 1928-1941

In this project, students will conduct original research about the history of early Soviet monumental art, specifically mural painting and tile mosaics. They will first study the general history and theory of early Soviet monumental art and will then each choose one specific work to research during the course of the project. This research will involve traveling to different sites around Moscow to look at extant objects firsthand. We will also have a series of guest speakers/visitors to the project, who will help the students better understand the history of avant-garde monumentality.
